Which one should you go for? You hear allot of people encouraging long content. They claim that is ranks higher with Google and provides more value. I’m not so sure. I’ve seen websites fail with long content, and succeed with short content.
But that doesn’t mean that long content doesn’t work. Rather, my experience has told me that the power of long content has been largely oversold to marketers in general. What matters more than content length is content quality.
Great content grabs the audiences attention, provides them with relevant, quality information, and leaves them wanting more. Rather than striving for content length, you’d be better off striving for content quality.
How to determine if your content is high quality...
Does it help, inform, and/or interest your target audience? Is it unique? Does it align with your marketing goals?
You might have noticed that none of those questions addresses SEO, content length, keywords etc. All those things are important, don’t get me wrong. But much more important than any of those metrics is the simple question:
Does your audience like your content?
Sounds simple, but that is really what it comes down to most of the time. If your readers like your content, or feel as if they got something useful out of it, they will be more likely to return for more. On the other hand, if you focus solely on making your content long, or SEO friendly, or keyword rich, and neglect the actual content quality, you'll have a much harder time growing your website.
Content is king.
If you think you can get your message across effectively in less than 1000 words, don’t worry about trying to make it longer just for the sake of it. Your readers are smart, and will pick up on that.
On the other hand if you are addressing a complicated topic that requires a longer post, a long content is the way to go. But never lose sight of the fact that your readers are here for one thing: value. Focus on providing value and you might find your results speak for themselves.
